Many homeowners love having hardwood floors because of the classic look. They are also reasonably easy to keep clean when crumbs spill, or dirt gets tracked in. If you have hardwood floors in your home or are considering installing them, here are some things you need to know to take care of them properly.
Keeping up cleaning on your hardwood floor protects them from becoming damaged or worn out. You should sweep or dust your hardwood floors every few days. You can also use a vacuum weekly to help keep them extra clean but always use a vacuum with a gentle, hardwood setting (not meant for carpets and rugs). By keeping them swept, dusted, and vacuumed regularly, you will not need to mop your hardwood floors as frequently. If you experience liquid spills, you should wipe it up immediately so it does not ruin the finish. You should deep clean your floors every one to two months, depending on how much use your floors get daily.
If you notice dirt, dust, or old spills that do not go away with a broom or vacuum, you will need to tackle that spot with a little more force. When you use a mop, be careful what cleaner you use. Only use something specifically made for hardwood floors to prevent any damage or discoloration to your floor’s finish. You should clean your floor one area at a time with a hardwood cleanser and a microfiber mop to remain gentle while cleaning.
Scuff marks are caused by moving furniture or wearing shoes on your hardwood floor. Seeing them on your floor can be irritating because it looks like your floor might be ruined. But there are some ways you can get rid of the scuff marks. If the scuff mark is fresh, you can sometimes get it out with a sponge and some warm water. For scuffs that are harder to remove, add a little baking soda to warm water, mix it until it becomes a smooth paste, and use a soft cloth to scrub away the mark. Then, be sure to clean and dry the area. Tough scuff marks can even be removed with a clean tennis ball. Just rub it over the scuff marks, and the fuzz will help remove it.
Besides regularly cleaning your hardwood floors, another way to protect them is to have them periodically cleaned by a professional cleaning company. By deep cleaning your hardwood floor, you can remove dirt and dust from the gaps in the planks. This can also help prevent any scratching or spotting in the areas that get a lot of foot traffic. A professional company can also add a shine to your floor to prevent future build-up.
